Kirsuber og möndlur í blóma

Kirsuber í blóma snemmvors, hvað er fegurra en það? Allavega er þetta töfrum slegið í mínum huga sem ólst upp við gluggaveður í mars heima á Íslandi. Fallegt veður en ískalt og enginn gróður farinn að lifna úti við. Hér í suðrinu sem ég dvel núna þennan marsmánuð blómstra kirsuberja- og möndlutrén eins og þau eigi lífið að leysa, sem þau eiga sjálfsagt því þau gera þetta ekki að gamni sínu heldur til að auka kyn sitt. Það sem heillar mig er ekki einungis fegurð blómanna og magn heldur að þetta eru dýrindis nytjaplöntur sem gefa þá bestu ávexti sem hugsast getur, kirsuber og möndlur. Hvílík lífsgæði sem þessi tré eru okkur mönnunum á alla lund.

Þar sem ég laðast að öllu ætilegu í flórunni og hef þörf til að gera því skil þá settist ég við að teikna greinar og blóm og fyrr en varði var ég búin að rista í dúk og byrjuð að prenta myndir. Þær spretta fram myndirnar og krefjast þess að vera léttar og væmnar. Alveg öfugt við raunheima þá vilja blómin vera fá í hverri mynd, ekkert ofhlæði.

Cherries and almonds in bloom

Cherry blossoms in early spring, is there anything more beautiful? It´s magical to me, as someone who grew up in Iceland where winter still reigns in March. The weather - though often beautiful - is freezing cold and the vegetation still lies dormant, waiting to come to life. This year I spend March in the south of France where I am experiencing real and true spring with the abundance of cherry and almond blossoms. What fascinates me is not only the beauty and quantity of the flowers but how these plants are both delicious and useful, producing the best fruits imaginable: cherries and almonds. It’s a wonder how these trees improve the quality of life  for us humans.

Since I'm attracted to everything edible in the flora and as it awakens my creativity, I sat down to draw the branches and flowers in front of me. Before long I had carved in linoleum and started printing pictures. In the beginning I tried to make the abundance of flowers visible but soon found that it was not how it was meant to be. Contrary to reality, the flowers demand to be few in each picture: singular and splendid, and not too crowded.
